Professional Carpet Cleaning

Still getting brown water after several passes? Before washing again, check whether your carpet needs more cleaning or simply better extraction.

By Carpet Heroes · Published

Should you keep washing until the water runs clear?

No. Do not keep adding water just to make the recovery tank look clear. Follow your carpet and machine instructions.

Check that the machine is extracting properly, and stop if the carpet becomes unusually wet or its colour changes.

Finish with the recommended extraction passes, then assess the result once dry rather than chasing colourless water.

Why does the recovered water still look dirty?

The tank collects what the machine has removed. Its appearance is useful to notice, but it cannot tell you everything about the carpet left behind.

You can see the same uncertainty in this AskUK discussion about dirty carpet cleaning water. The reader describes a reasonable looking carpet and repeated attempts to get cleaner wastewater.

The useful question is what needs attention now. Is there a visible mark? Is the carpet becoming wetter? Has the machine stopped picking up properly?

Does brown water mean the carpet is ruined?

Not by itself. A photograph of brown wastewater cannot establish whether the issue is ordinary soiling, a product previously used or a change in the carpet.

If the carpet itself changes colour during cleaning, stop and seek advice. Do not assume that another bottle or another wash will correct it.

What if a mark returns as the carpet dries?

Returning marks need a different decision from dirty tank water. Rug Doctor’s moisture guidance notes that excess wetting can cause staining to reappear from lower in the carpet.

Take a photograph and explain what was there before cleaning. Our stain and spot removal service is a relevant next step when a particular mark needs assessment.

What is the difference between a wet pass and a dry pass?

A wet pass applies cleaning liquid while the machine works over the carpet. A rinse adds water without fresh detergent, where the instructions allow it.

A dry pass uses the carpet washer to recover moisture without spraying more liquid. It does not mean using an ordinary dry vacuum cleaner on a wet carpet at home.

Wet passes, rinsing and extraction compared
ActionAdds more water?What to check
Wet cleaning passYesUse the product, settings and number of passes specified for your machine and carpet.
Water rinseYesCheck whether your exact model supports this step and how to operate it.
Extraction or dry passNo additional spray when correctly selectedConfirm that water delivery is off and the washer is collecting moisture.

A rinse and a dry pass are different actions. If you keep rinsing, you are still adding water.

BISSELL Commercial’s cleaning guidance also distinguishes applying solution from extracting it.

What should you do when the water stays brown?

1. Pause before adding another tank

Check the carpet as well as the wastewater. Do not make clear water your only finishing test.

If the surface is becoming unusually wet, stop spraying. If you notice a new colour change, stop the cleaning process and ask for advice.

2. Read the instructions for your exact machine

Rug Doctor’s guide for its red rental machine specifies one wet pass and explains how to make further passes without spraying.

The VAX CDCW-SWXP guide allows repeat cleaning for heavy soiling, while warning against saturation. It also describes an optional rinse and a dry mode.

Those differences matter. Check your model rather than copying a pass count from someone using another machine.

3. Check poor pickup before continuing

If your washer is dispensing liquid but retrieving very little, stop adding more. Follow its troubleshooting instructions, switching off and unplugging before maintenance checks.

BISSELL’s suction guidance explains that a full recovery tank can activate a float and reduce suction on the model covered.

Use the relevant support page for your own machine. Contact the manufacturer or hire provider if normal operation does not return.

4. Finish and allow for drying

Complete the extraction stage described in your manual. Avoid repeatedly working one spot while waiting for its water to change colour.

Ventilate the room where practical. See our guide to how long carpet takes to dry after cleaning for the factors that affect drying.

If the carpet remains unusually wet, develops a persistent smell or shows a new problem, seek advice promptly. You do not need to wait for another full wash to fail.

Which cleaning product or service should you choose?

Start with the problem and the equipment you already have. Buying a stronger sounding product is not a useful answer to every dark tank or stubborn mark.

Rug Doctor’s rental instructions specifically warn against laundry detergent. Follow the approved product instructions rather than adding household mixtures to the tank.

This is a compatibility decision, not a product ranking. We have not tested every machine or cleaning solution against one another.

When is a professional assessment useful?

Ask for help when a mark persists, the carpet changes unexpectedly or you are uncertain whether further treatment is suitable.

If the concern is a smell, our guide to why carpet can smell after cleaning explains that problem separately.

Tell the cleaner about the fibre if known, the products used, how often you washed the area and what changed afterwards.

What should a good carpet cleaner explain?

A useful conversation covers the carpet’s condition, the proposed work and the result you can reasonably expect. A promise to remove every mark should not replace that discussion.

The National Carpet Cleaners Association’s explanation of a professional visit describes assessment and the limits of stain removal.

When comparing Southampton cleaners, ask how they will approach your particular concern. The answer is more useful than a claim that one machine or chemical fixes everything.

Questions about dirty water and repeated cleaning

Why is my carpet still dirty after cleaning?

First, distinguish a visible problem on the carpet from dirty water in the tank. They are not the same observation.

A mark that remains may need assessment rather than another full wash. Point out the exact area and explain how it looked before cleaning.

Why does my carpet feel sticky after cleaning?

Product residue is one possibility, but the feel alone does not establish the cause. Keep the bottle details and explain how much you used.

BISSELL Commercial’s guidance linked above explains that excess shampoo can leave sticky residue.

Do not add another product to cancel out the first. Ask for advice on the carpet and treatment already applied.

Why is the recovery tank still full of foam?

Check the product and dose against your model’s instructions. The VAX guide linked above identifies unsuitable solution as one possible cause of excessive foam.

If foaming persists, stop adding products and ask the manufacturer or hire provider what to do next.

How much carpet cleaning solution do I need?

Use the dose specified for your exact machine and product. Different systems have different tanks and mixing arrangements, so there is no single amount for every washer.

Measure as instructed. Dark wastewater is not a reason to increase the concentration.

Can you use any carpet cleaning solution in a VAX?

Follow the instructions for your model. The VAX guide linked above specifies VAX solution and warns that other products can cause excessive foaming.

Check the approved product and filling instructions before using a substitute.

Should I wash again after a professional clean?

If you are concerned, contact the cleaner first. Describe the remaining mark, smell or dampness and share photographs where useful.

Another machine collecting dirty water does not, on its own, prove what happened during the previous visit. Give the cleaner a chance to assess the actual concern.
