If you’ve asked for a quote on carpet cleaning, you’ve probably heard both terms — hot water extraction (often called “steam cleaning”) and dry carpet cleaning. Both are legitimate professional methods, but they work differently, suit different situations, and leave your carpet in a different state afterwards. Here’s a straight comparison to help you understand what you’re actually booking.

What Is Hot Water Extraction?

Hot water extraction injects a heated water and cleaning solution mixture deep into the carpet pile under pressure, then immediately extracts it back out along with the dirt, dust mites, and residue it’s loosened. It’s the method recommended by most carpet manufacturers for a genuine deep clean, and it’s what we use as our default method at Carpet Heroes for most domestic carpets.

What Is Dry Carpet Cleaning?

Dry cleaning methods use little to no moisture — typically a specialised cleaning compound or low-moisture foam is worked into the carpet and then vacuumed out, taking the loosened dirt with it. There’s no “drying time” in the way there is with hot water extraction, since barely any liquid goes in to begin with.

Which Method Should You Choose?

For most homes in Southampton, hot water extraction gives the more thorough result — it’s better at lifting embedded grit, pet dander, and allergens, which matters if anyone in the household has allergies or asthma. Dry cleaning has its place where you need the room back in use within the hour, such as a shop floor or an office that can’t close, or on certain carpet backings that shouldn’t be over-wetted.

We inspect the carpet first and recommend the method that suits the fibre, the backing, and your situation — rather than defaulting to one method for every job.

What We Use at Carpet Heroes

Hot water extraction is our standard method for domestic carpet cleaning, rug cleaning, and upholstery cleaning across Southampton, because it delivers the deepest clean for the vast majority of homes. If you have a specific concern — a delicate rug, a time-sensitive let, or a carpet that’s previously been over-wetted — mention it when you book and we’ll advise on the best approach.
