A practical, Southampton-tested guide to wine, coffee, pet, and ink stains — and when it’s time to call in the professionals.
Years Local Experience
Speed matters more than almost anything else when it comes to carpet stains. The longer a spill sits, the further it works into the pile and the backing beneath it — so knowing what to do in the first few minutes can be the difference between a mark that lifts completely and one that needs a professional treatment. Here’s what actually works for the stains we’re asked about most.
Blot up as much as possible immediately. Cover the stain with a generous layer of table salt or baking soda to draw out the remaining liquid, leave for a few minutes, then vacuum it up. Follow with a mix of cold water and a small amount of washing-up liquid, blotted in and lifted out, repeating until the mark fades.
Blot immediately, then apply a solution of cold water with a few drops of white vinegar and washing-up liquid. Blot from the outside in, rinse the area with plain cold water, and blot dry. Older, set-in coffee stains are one of the most common reasons people call us for professional stain removal.
Blot up as much as possible, then use an enzyme-based pet stain cleaner rather than a standard carpet shampoo — enzyme cleaners break down the proteins in the mess at a molecular level rather than just masking the smell. Standard cleaners can leave a residue that actually encourages pets to return to the same spot. If the odour persists, see our allergy & pet odour treatment service.
Ink is one of the trickiest DIY stains. Dab (never rub) with rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth, working from the outside in, and change to a clean section of cloth frequently so you’re not just spreading the ink further. Ink on wool or delicate fibres is best left to a professional to avoid discolouring the carpet.
DIY treatment works well for fresh, small stains. Call in professional stain and spot removal if the stain has already set, covers a large area, keeps reappearing after cleaning (a sign it’s wicking up from the underlay), or is on a delicate or natural fibre where the wrong product could cause more damage than the stain itself. We use professional-grade, rug and carpet-safe treatments that go beyond what’s available in a supermarket.
